The Underachievers - 6th Sense

Underachievers have released a new track in memory of Jamal Dewar (Capital Steez) who died on Christmas eve. The track has a hard beat with some nice samples. Underachievers have their usual mix of hyped flow and style, with strong lyricism with depth. Looking forward to watching these guys blow.

Flatbush Zombies - MRAZ

New track from Flatbush Zombies with a catchy beat produced by Eric Ark Elliott, the third member of Zombies, and a catchy hook. Juice and Darko bring fun hyped bars with a bit more character than some of these monotone rappers. So much talent in NYC right now, anyone else looking for a  Underachievers/Flatbush Zombies colab?

In the early hours of this morning, Joey Badass tweeted "This unfortunate xmas eve.. Lost a best friend, a brother, a pro, a partner. Letting go is never easy.. May ur soul rest in peace Jamal.." followed by RIP CAPITAL STEEZ!!! 7.7.93 - 12.24.12”.

Although there are very few details yet, it would appear that this tradegy may have been self-inflicted, Jamal (Steez) posting on his twitter shortly before the news came through, "The end."

Jamal Dewar, also known as Capital STEEZ was taken from us at only 19. He was one of the most promising young rappers of our generation. He had so much potential and we were all looking forward to seeing what he would do next. His song ‘Vibe Ratings’ was the inspiration for the name and creation of this page, and he will be sorely missed by his family, friends and fans.

R.I.P Capital Steez - 7.7.93 - 24.12.12

Portrey Youth - Living

Portrey Youth is someone I’ve only really discovering through tumblr, and is an up and coming artist I’ve been following a few months now. This track is called ‘Living’ and is a reflective track on his dreams and ambitions which sits on the border between spoken word and rap, over a bluesy sprawling beat with a nice guitar riff. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, it feels like Portrey Youth is trying something a little different from what we hear these days. He plans to release a new mixtape in early 2013.

“I want people to not be able to hear anything like Portrey Youth anywhere.” - Portrey Youth

Big K.R.I.T - Rich Dad Poor Dad

The talented Big K.R.I.T brings us a powerful track, ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’. On the track Big K.R.I.T tells us about his father, who he obviously admires, and the lessons that he taught him as he was growing up. Big K.R.I.T has a talent for speaking on real topics, delivering it in a clear and considered style. The Vent by KRIT is still one of my favourite tracks.

The beat is equally powerful, with a hard-hitting resonating drum beat, a simple piano riff, with strings coming in around the chorus. It has been released on Pitchfork TV with a simple video of KRIT as a teenager, with scenes that depict the lyrics. I feel like the title and chorus ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ reflects that although his father was not rich as far as money, he was rich in his soul and parenthood.

Lupe Fiasco -

With his departure from social-networking in favour of a re-debut of sorts in 2013, Lupe leaves us with a short track titled ‘’. The track features a simple and relaxed beat with a little brass section which Lupe effortlessly flows over for two minutes. This track won’t change the world, but it’s easy on the ears. Give it a listen.

A$AP Rocky - 1 Train (ft. Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson & Big K.R.I.T.)

The track ‘1 Train’ mentioned on the ‘Long Live A$ap’ tracklist has been released early, easily the most anticipated track on the soon to be released album. It has lived up to the anticipation with each rapper going in with their unique style and flow, Joey and Kendrick bring a extra raw style for this track. Danny Brown also comes in hard.

The beat sounds like an old-skool influenced style, while using modern sounds and synths, much like tracks off A$AP Mob’s mixtape ‘Lord$ Never Worry’. This track is set to become a classic, and I think everyone is even more hyped for Long Live A$AP coming out January 15th.

RWND: A Tribe Called Quest - Buggin’ Out

For this week’s RWND we bring you a ‘Buggin’ Out’ from the forefathers of Hip Hop, the mighty Tribe. Tribe have had a huge influence on Hip Hop over the years and still do, there being countless remix’ of their classic tracks.

Buggin’ Out is one of my favourite Tribe tracks, featuring their classic jazzy style with a heavy bassline. This track came out on their 1991 album ‘The Low End Theory’ and still sounds fresh to this day.

I encourage you to check out more of their music if your not already a fan. Stay tuned for next week’s RWND!

Jacob Banks - Kids On The Corner

We’ve got something a bit different for you today, but we think you’ll enjoy. Jacob Banks is a rising talent from Birmingham. He has an amazing voice and is also a talented musician on various instruments. Its great to hear some new soulful bluesy (is that a word!?) music coming out these days. He has even done a session with Plan B, which encouraged him to peruse his career in music further.

This track is called ‘Kids On The Corner’, for which he recently released a video. It has a fast rhythm with a nice guitar riff and piano and percussion in the background. His voice speaks for itself..

He has also released another new track in the past couple of days, which is a more emotional track by the name of ‘Dear Simone’. You can listen to it on soundcloud here.

Dyme-A-Duzin - Swank Sinatra (ft. Joey Bada$$, Capital STEEZ & CJ Fly)

Brooklyn MC Dyme-A-Duzin released a new track ‘Swank Sinatra’ featuring Pro Era Joey Bada$$, Capital STEEZ & CJ Fly. It has a mix of the old skool beats with a new skool twist. With the short sharp verses from each of the four rappers keeps the song interesting. This matches the video, using alot of short clips, having the mic hanging down in the centre of most of the shots is a nice idea.

Dyme-A-Duzin has a mixtape named ‘A Portrait of Donnovan’ dropping 9.1.13.
